The Esthetician’s Guide to Oil Cleansing for Sensitive Skin

The Esthetician’s Guide to Oil Cleansing for Sensitive Skin

The best cleansing oil for sensitive skin is a gentle, non-comedogenic botanical oil. It dissolves makeup, SPF and daily debris without stripping your skin barrier. Massage it onto dry skin, then remove it with a warm, damp cloth. At IN GROOV, we believe your skin is not broken. It’s communicating. Sensitive skin is often telling you one thing: it needs balance, not harsh cleansers.

Our founder, Shani Hillian, has spent almost two decades in the treatment room. This guide shares what she has learned about the oil cleansing method and how to make it part of your daily skincare ritual.

Why Oil Cleansing Works for Sensitive Skin

Many cleansers clean the skin by removing everything, including the natural oils your skin needs to protect itself. For sensitive skin, this often leads to tightness, redness and irritation. Then the skin produces even more oil to make up for it.

Oil cleansing works differently. It cleans while respecting the skin barrier. That is why estheticians often recommend it for delicate, reactive or redness-prone skin.

How a Botanical Cleansing Oil Cleans Without Stripping

Oil dissolves oil. A botanical cleansing oil melts makeup, sunscreen, excess sebum and impurities on contact. There is no need to scrub or rub hard. When you remove it with a warm cloth, the debris lifts away and your skin keeps its comfort.

The result is skin that feels clean, soft and calm, not tight. Over time, a balanced skin barrier means less sensitivity and a healthier glow.

Why does your skin need oil to thrive?

Will a Cleansing Oil Break Me Out?

This is the question we hear most in the treatment room. The answer: not if you choose the right oil. Look for a non-comedogenic face oil made with lightweight plant oils that won’t clog pores.

Is oil cleansing good for oily or acne-prone skin? Yes. When skin is stripped, it often overproduces oil. A well-formulated oil cleanser for acne-prone skin helps regulate natural sebum production instead. Ingredients like milk thistle oil, known for supporting clearer skin, make a real difference.

The Oil Cleansing Method, Step by Step:

Double Cleansing for Sensitive Skin

A double cleansing routine means cleansing twice: once to remove makeup and SPF, and once to clean the skin itself. For sensitive skin, you don’t need a harsh foaming cleanser for the second step. Simply repeat your oil cleanse.

This keeps your routine simple and gentle, and it protects your skin barrier day after day. It is one of the easiest ways to calm skin redness caused by over-cleansing.

How to Oil Cleanse: The Esthetician’s Ritual

No magic, just ritual. Oil cleansing takes about two minutes, and it can become one of the most calming moments of your day.

The Oil Cleansing Method, Step by Step:
1. Start with dry skin and dry hands. Oil works best before water touches your face.
2. Apply 3 to 4 pumps of cleansing oil into your palms.
3. Massage gently over your face, neck and décolleté for 60 seconds. Take your time around the eyes to melt mascara and makeup.
4. Remove with a warm, damp cloth or a reusable cotton round. Our 100% organic cotton rounds, made locally in NYC, are soft enough for the most delicate skin.
5. Repeat if needed until your skin feels clean and free of impurities.
6. Follow with a hydrating step. Mist IRIE Sea Mineral Essence on freshly cleansed skin to soothe redness and refresh.
