Okra + Flaxseed Gel For Hydrated Skin + Hair
BEFORE
AFTER
There’s something beautiful about going back to simple ingredients, isn't it?
Before elaborate beauty routines and endless shelves of products, plants were often the starting point for caring for hair and skin. Two humble ingredients that have earned a place in the DIY beauty world are okra and flaxseed; both naturally rich in mucilage, the slippery, gel-like substance released when they meet water.
The result? A silky homemade gel that can be used as a hydrating hair treatment, curl refresher, or short-contact skin mask.
Think of it as a little botanical hydration ritual for your beauty routine.
Why Okra + Flaxseed?
Okra and flaxseed both produce a naturally slippery gel when cooked or soaked in water.
That texture is what makes this DIY especially interesting for hair. The gel can provide slip, making it easier to distribute through the hair and potentially helping with detangling and styling. Flaxseed gel is also popular among curly and coily hair communities as a lightweight styling aid.
For skin, the gel creates a temporary moisture-rich layer on the surface, leaving skin feeling soft, smooth, and refreshed after rinsing.
Sometimes beauty is simply about giving your skin and hair a moment of gentle care.
DIY Okra & Flaxseed Gel
What You'll Need
4–5 fresh okra pods
2 tablespoons whole flaxseeds
2 cups distilled water
A small saucepan
Fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth
Clean glass container
How to Make It
1. Prepare the okra.
Wash the okra and slice it into thin rounds. The more surface area you create, the easier it is for the okra to release its natural gel.
2. Combine your ingredients.
Add the sliced okra, flaxseeds, and distilled water to a small saucepan.
3. Simmer gently.
Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer and cook for approximately 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally. You’re looking for the water to become noticeably slippery and gel-like.
4. Strain.
Remove from the heat and allow it to cool slightly. While the mixture is still warm, strain it through a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth.
5. Cool and store.
Transfer the finished gel into a clean container and refrigerate for up to 2 weeks.
How to Use It on Your Hair
This gel can be used several ways depending on what your hair needs.
As a Pre-Shampoo Treatment (my favorite)
Apply the gel generously to damp hair, focusing on the lengths and ends.
Cover your hair and allow the treatment to sit for approximately 20–30 minutes before rinsing and shampooing as usual.
As a Detangling Treatment
Apply the gel to damp sections of hair before detangling. The natural slip can make working through the hair more comfortable and help your comb or fingers move through the strands more easily.
How to Use It on Your Skin
This is best treated as a short-contact hydrating mask, rather than an overnight treatment.
Start with freshly cleansed skin and apply a thin layer of the gel.
Allow it to sit for approximately 10–15 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water.
Follow with your mist, like IRIE and favorite moisturizer like EVERY MOOD to help maintain that soft, hydrated feeling.
Because everyone's skin is different, patch-test the mixture before applying it to your entire face. Avoid using it on broken, irritated, or freshly exfoliated skin.
